The Town Crier
The “Official” News of Dauphin Island
Issue #20, November 2000
In an effort to keep the citizens of Dauphin Island better informed the Mayor and Town Council plan on distributing The Town Crier at the end of each month. Our goal is to highlight the council meetings and other newsworthy events. This is not intended as a substitute for attending public meetings in person. Council Meetings are normally held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 7 PM. Agenda meetings are normally held the Mondays before each council meeting at 5:00 PM and are open to the public. The council meetings for November are scheduled for Tuesday, November 7, 2000 and Tuesday, November 21, 2000. These meetings are open to the public. We look forward to seeing you there.
Town Hall & the Street Department will be closed Thursday & Friday, November 23rd & 24th for the Thanksgiving Holiday. The Mayor, Council, and staff wishes you a happy and healthy holiday season!
DON’T FORGET TO VOTE NOVEMBER 7TH: Voting at Old Town Hall located next to the Street Department and the Fire & Rescue Building. Polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Call 694-6400 for absentee voting info.
PAY-AS-YOU-GO PROGRAM ON THE BALLOT NOVEMBER 7th: The Mobile County Commission approved the Engineering Report for the 2000 Transportation Pay-As-You-Go Program. However, resurfacing these roads is contingent upon the program being approved by the vote of the public at the November 7th Election. The roads on Dauphin Island that are included in this resurfacing program are: Admiral Semmes Ave, Alvarado St, Barcelona Dr, Biloxi Ave, Cavalier Cir, Delchamps Ave, Diard Cir, Eldorado Ave, Fort Charlotte Ave, Gen. Wilkinson Pl, Hernando St, Iberville Dr, Indian Pl, Key St, La Salle St, Maldonado Pl, Marquette Pl, Mauvilla Pl, Mississippi St, Montberaut Pl, Octavia St, and Orleans Dr. If approved, resurfacing should take place within one year.
ADEM’s BURN BAN: The Alabama Department of Environmental Management has banned most burning by homeowners in Mobile County. This partial ban is instituted to protect human health and to help achieve compliance with more stringent ozone standards. Open burning is specifically banned for such purposes as construction and demolition activities, residential and commercial land development, and yard maintenance. Effective January 2000, all types of open burning are prohibited during the “ozone” months of May through September in Mobile County. Homeowners and contractors can open burn from October through April if they can comply with the following conditions: (1) The burn site must be at least 500 feet from the nearest neighbor’s house. (2) Only untreated wood and plant growth may be burned on the property from which it came. It is illegal to open burn heavy oils, chemicals, plastics, rubber, asphalt products, paper cardboard, salvage materials, or any refuse and garbage year round. (3) You can only start or add to the fire between 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Certain activities authorize open burning any place at any time and are not currently affected by any seasonal burning ban in South Alabama. Some of these activities include: (1) Cooking food; (2) Recreation or ceremonies; (3) Prevention or control of disease or pests; (4) Training firefighters; (5) Recognized agricultural, silvicultural, range and wildlife management practices permitted by the Alabama Forestry Commission; and (6) Container fires to keep outdoor workers warm.
TOWN HALL GETS FACELIFT: Hopefully you have noticed the recent improvements to Town Hall. The building was pressure washed and then given two coats of wood preservative.
